The Myth That Won't Die
Ask almost any gardener what causes blossom end rot and they'll say calcium deficiency without hesitating. It's such a persistent idea that entire product lines exist just to sell calcium sprays for tomatoes, and garden centers still stock the shelves with them every summer. Here's what makes the myth so sticky: calcium actually is involved. The sunken, blackened patch on the fruit really is caused by a localized calcium shortage in that developing tomato. The problem is what happens next in most people's heads — they hear "calcium" and assume the fix is adding more of it.
The Part the Supplement Aisle Skips
Most New England garden soil already has plenty of calcium in it, especially anywhere with a history of lime or a near-neutral pH. Adding more to soil that isn't actually short does nothing for the fruit that's already rotting. Calcium only moves through a plant one way: dissolved in water, riding up through the xylem to wherever that water stream is headed. It gets carried to the fastest-growing tissue and, once it's deposited in a leaf, it can't be pulled back out and redirected to the fruit. The blossom end of a developing tomato is the last stop on that plumbing line, and the first place to come up short when the flow gets interrupted.
So What's Actually Interrupting It
Picture your soil swinging from soaked to bone-dry between waterings, which is exactly what happens with an irregular watering schedule, a heavy rain after a dry stretch, or a container that dries out fast in August heat. Every time the water stops, the calcium delivery stops right along with it. That's the real cause in the overwhelming majority of cases: inconsistent watering, not a deficient soil.
What Doesn't Work
Epsom salt is a genuinely popular home remedy and a complete myth here — it's magnesium sulfate with zero calcium in it, and the added magnesium can actually compete with calcium for uptake, making things worse rather than better. Eggshells and crushed Tums in the planting hole take far too long to break down to matter this season. Calcium foliar sprays are a mixed bag at best, since fruit has a tough, waxy skin with no stomata, making it a poor candidate for absorbing much of anything sprayed directly on it.
What Actually Fixes It
Consistent, deep watering, ideally on a drip line or soaker hose with a timer, is the single most effective fix, because steady moisture keeps that calcium delivery line running without interruption. A couple inches of mulch helps enormously by evening out soil moisture between waterings so you're not accidentally recreating the soaked-to-dry cycle yourself. There's no way to reverse the rot on fruit that's already affected, so pull those off and let the next flush come in clean once your watering rhythm stabilizes.
If you want to rule out an actual soil deficiency rather than guess, a soil test is cheap and will tell you definitively whether calcium is genuinely short — worth doing once if blossom end rot shows up year after year despite steady watering.
